The matchup: natural blend vs workhorse synthetic
Cotton-linen is a blend of two natural fibres prized for breathability and texture; polyester is the synthetic workhorse behind modern upholstery, outdoor fabric and performance textiles. Neither is "better" — the winner depends on your application.
Side-by-side comparison
- Comfort — cotton-linen breathes and feels natural against the skin; polyester is less breathable unless specially engineered.
- Durability — polyester resists abrasion, stretching and UV damage far better; cotton-linen wears faster under heavy use.
- Care — polyester is low-maintenance and quick-drying; cotton-linen creases, shrinks if not pre-treated, and needs gentler washing.
- Colour — polyester takes bright, high-fastness dye and resists fading; cotton-linen offers softer, more natural shades.
- Cost — polyester is generally cheaper per metre at equal construction; cotton-linen commands a natural-fibre premium.
- Sustainability — cotton-linen is plant-based and biodegradable; polyester is petroleum-derived unless recycled (rPET).
When to choose each
- Choose cotton-linen for apparel, bedding, casual residential upholstery and eco-positioned products.
- Choose polyester for outdoor furniture, contract seating, high-traffic public spaces and long-life applications.
- Consider blends — cotton-linen with a polyester core, or recycled-polyester outer, can deliver the best of both.
State your use case, budget and sustainability target before sampling; the right answer falls out of the requirements, not the fabric's reputation.
Choose fabric by application, not by habit.
