Tear Strength & Tensile Testing: The Structural Guarantee

Tear strength: the fabric's real-world weak point

A snag or cut starts a tear, and a fabric's tear strength decides how fast that tear runs. Two common tests:

  • Tongue tear (single rip) — a cut is made, then pulled apart; measures the force needed to propagate the tear. The standard for most upholstery and outdoor cloth.
  • Elmendorf tear — a pendulum-driven tear; fast and reproducible, common for lightweight and coated fabrics.

Tensile strength: the fabric's backbone

Tensile strength measures the force needed to break the cloth — the grab test pulls a clamped section to failure. It matters for:

  • Awnings and canopies — wind load stresses the panel seams.
  • Furniture bases — webbing and base cloths must hold the frame.
  • Marine covers — repeated tension in storms.

Reading the test report

  1. Report both warp and weft directions — cloth is never isotropic.
  2. Compare tear and tensile together: a fabric can be strong in tension yet tear easily once cut.
  3. Ask for values at finished state, after coating or lamination — finishing changes both numbers.

Strength data turns "it feels sturdy" into "it is guaranteed sturdy" — and protects your warranty exposure on large outdoor programs.
